Pretty far from accurate actually. This is going to be my next game. I'm not playing an MMO right now, and this will be the one that I will be playing next.
This has absolutely nothing to do with me getting a spot in Beta.
To me, this is just about letting those that are doubtful, or unsure about the game get in, and see just how great it is. It is about letting those that want more from WOW, but are not willing to spend $50 on a game they aren't sure is up their ally getting a chance to try it for a couple days right before release. This is about the people that are happy with the game they are in, getting to see just how great this game is, when they otherwise would have stayed where they were.
It has nothing to do with me getting to test the game, or anyone else. I don't care about that. At the time the open Beta would take place, the game would be in transit to the businesses anyway.
Word of mouth, and magazine ads are one thing. They will sway some...letting everyone test your game a couple days before it comes out will sway thousands, if your product is what you say it is.
If the devs feel they have a great game, it would be a wonderful way to get thousands of players to buy and subscribe to the game that otherwise wouldn't.
People will have plenty of time in beta 3 to talk about the game, and key people from the press will be in beta 4 as well.
