I know a lot of people are concerned about this, so I'm going to speak for myself, as a player.
I played EQ for many years, I have tried various other MMO's but I would say that EverQuest and World of Warcraft (6 years and 2 years respectively) are definitely the games I have played the most.
Quests in Vanguard are for the most part easy to find, they help to lead you to places that will have new quests for you as you progress through levels, it allows new players to explore the world but without getting lost unless they want to.
Its important to remember that not everyone loves to sojourn, meandering across the wilds of the land with no destination in mind. Its your choice to follow the road more traveled or to take your own. Regardless of how quests are laid out, or how we influence people to play, people who want to rush to the top will find the quickest way, and that will be that. Its about personal choice.
I personally don't quest all that much, be it WoW, Vaguard, or any other game. I just like to go and grind on mobs and lose myself for a few hours, if I get bored ill pick up a few quests. I'm most at home in a good group of people though sharing the adventure across hills and valleys, exploring caves, dying...getting killed again after dying...
People have different preferences, ergo, we offer choice. The only one forcing you to follow the yellow brick road is yourself.
