Good old Performance Forum... AKA My home away from home.
So let me get this post up and start collecting some Performance FAQ issues. I'll try to nail some here, and let you guys know where we are and where we're going.
Firstly, let me allay any crazy rumors that we're done optimizing. Truth is, we'll be optimizing for months to come. Any live game spends some percentage of their time trying to optimize, be it client frame rate, server frame rate, bandwidth, etc. etc.
"Optimized" is like "Perfected"; they are aspirations you strive for, not a state you are in.
We have had several optimization runs thus far both in client and server performance. If you ask some of the 'old timers' of Vanguard how the game ran six months ago versus today, I think you'd get a chuckle and a sort of 'aw man, be glad you weren't around for that!' kind of look.
Client-side, we are still running with some extra code that will not exist in release, and we have several mundane tasks which will net us some frames coming in the next couple weeks. In all, I expect everyone in Vanguard to see at least a 10% increase in frame rate by release, with those on much slower systems seeing the greatest percentage increase.
Server-side, we are able to handle hundreds of players in an area and still have the server run at a 'fun' rate. We have some issues in some areas, and we're working rapidly to fix those anomolies.
All that said, expect optimization to continue for months, possibly years, as we continue to strive to make Vanguard run better, play better, and look better.
