Well, "The Vision" is an important thing in the history of Brad and MMO's.

Up to, and including, the Velious era of EQ, Brad's Vision (Ok, it might not be just his, but he's the most famous for it's invocation) drove EQ's development. It also included many things that made the game "harder" that people griped about, including the spellbook for medding and other inconveniences.

After he left is when things started changing. Many of those things were changed or removed, getting rid of "stuff" people didn't like. Subscription numbers also rose...until EQ2 and WoW were released.

That is what I mean when I say Vanguard won't surpass WoW unless the vision gets changed. Unless things are made less time-intensive, less grindy, less "tougher" then I can't see as many people lining up to play. Vanguard will (assuming it stays largely as it is now) appeal to a subsect of MMO players who want the increased difficulty.

We did get rid of the spellbook in your face and other annoying aspects of the game under my watch. That said, EQ's subscriptions peaked while I was there and didn't go up after I and other key people left. The game is also old, and more and more MMOGs came out, so this also contributed to the game shrinking.

To back this up, you can look at subscriber timelines as well as the fact that we didn't combine any servers while I was there.
