I know sigil ran out of money. I know we will never truely now why the change from microsoft to sony had to happen. I also know that the developers tried very hard to make a game for all of us to play.
However the more I think of it, the more I wonder. Had the key aspects of the original VG design, and the current design is NOT anywhere near the original one, do you think things would be better or worse now?
What i comes down is a simplified foundation with promise of a unseen future, or a solid foundation that in itself spoke for what the future held for us? Also on the dev side of things.. do they wish they could go back in time and not do the drastic changes that they did?
I am talking a full harvesting sphere. A working fellowship and caravan system. A promise of a drop system that you could count on by putting forth more effort not exackly more time. The unknown of more self sustained outposts to call home. A "dont throw the baby out with the bathwater" approach? Its not that these things couldnt happen, but they should have. What is the point of making a mmorpg that is failing on so many fronts that would have had the long-term support, even with all the current bug issues in mind, if only they had designed the game they sold us on?
So lets just put aside for the minute all the technical issues in the game and just focus on the meat and potatoes for now. Thats really is what retains the playerbase. It is the ability for the player to know for themselves that the game has a foundation that they want to build upon, make a name for themselves, and most importantly count on to be there down the road. That is the only thing currently that you just count on in VG is stability in the mechanics. That is I think their biggest error right now and they just keep pushing it and pushing it and slowly alienating themselves from the player.
This game is not a social game in its current form. The game has the primary mechanics focusing more on quick treats and the ones that create a evo-system among the playerbase is being left further and further behind.
In all respect to what the developers want to believe that is a reality in their game, it is a 1-20 training ground, a 20-38 missive game, a 38-49 grind, and a 50+ waiting game for a quick fix right now. There is very little, if non at all, to look back at what you have past beyond missed heroic drop oppurtunities. No social aspects really and that will even get more subjective to why anyone would want to wait when you can soon release dropped loot to someone effected by TLC or someone too low to do the content.
The focal points of this game revolves around places like Infineum and Arena because that is where you can quest for the good gear. Why spend a few hours in a dungeon with crap itemization if your not effected by TLC when you can farm by brute force on quest content for a set reward you can count on to be there when you get there without fail?
There is no real distraction from the career of progression right now. TLC can slow it down if you want a certain item but beyond that there just isnt any incentive to really strive and progression agaist the current machine.
Sigil, you really should have stuck to your original design. Your not in fault for trying to give us a game that you designed. You ARE faulted for selling us on a idea that you had several great mechanics that would have set you apart from the other mmorpgs that you couldnt deliver. VG isnt a bad game, but your always going to have the dirty little stigma of having the worst CRASH of development ideas second only to horizons. You just had enough money to go with Plan B.. or C.. or D.. or F.
So many people said you were the real EQ2 you know. They didnt want EQ again, but a game like EQ yet with better social aspects and mechanics that invited more playstyles to enjoy it and satisfy the craving on many fronts.
I wonder how long before on another forum, on another game, someone will state that "This is going to be the REAL vanguard!" and I hope you dont take it personal because your the one who gave up on us first, not the other way around.
Hopefully on some of the more controversial issues that cannot by definition co-exist on the same server/shard, we can use alternate rule-set servers. Thoughts?
