That has got to be one of the lamest excuses I've heard from a business in a long time. "Our lead QA guy has no backup"? WHA?!
If "Ed" gets hit by lightning tomorrow, we won't get anymore patches at all? The Sigil QA team is so reliant on THIS SINGLE INDIVIDUAL that no one can function in a backup capacity? Looks to me like "Ed" is a SPOF (That's Single Point of Failure). I've been in the IT world for over 15 years and I have to say that this is the first time I have ever heard an excuse like this. In my experience, when you go on vacation, you make sure that your backup is made up to date on what you were working on and can cover for you in your absence. I'm quite sure Ed needed and deserved his momentary respite, but to not have a backup for his duties, frankly, is inexcusable from the standpoint of both a customer and as someone who works in the IT industry.
Not what we're saying at all really. We have 2 others (soon to be 3) who can make builds just fine. We decided to hold off and add more to the patch and work out more issues (letting them sit on test longer and be tested) and let Ed enjoy his Vacation.
It's not a Single Point of Failure. Would it be awful if he did get struck by lightning? Definitely yes, but we'd still be able to continue patching. We have a very small QA and Operations department - those who do make builds also have other responsibilities to work on as well and everything must be prioritized accordingly.
By the way - Patch 5AM tomorrow
