I don't have all the details, but the last time I talked to a coder on the subject of framerate and large numbers of players the level of "detail" on the players was very minimal in affecting the framerate - it has to do with something other than just pushing polys.

The last time my guild went to an area with 18+ people hitting a mob, I was receiving the same framerate on the highest settings as I was on the lowest settings.

I generally run the game on the highest settings possible, or on balanced, with the texture detail cranked to maximum and the clip plane maxed.
