You can't run around eye-balling the nodes for rare names for leather, as you can with other resources. If you want to harvest ultra-rare hides, you must kill thousands of skin-able mobs, because only then can you learn if they have rare hides. To increase your odds beyond the negligible, you must group up... somehow convincing your group mates to spend hours, days or even weeks to keep slaughtering mobs and helping with the skinning. But, if they demand that the hides be on lotto or that they be shared, you have defeated your purpose.
Skinning is treated the same as other harvesting when it is to its detriment; and differently than other harvesting when it is to its detriment. I think it is time to stop with the dogmatic response that all harvesting is the same, and admit that skinning is in some ways unique... and could use some adjustments to account for that.
Or don't... I gave up trying to make nice leather armor with all the problems with harvesting and crafting over the last month. How many others have as well, I wonder?
All I said was that the rate was set the same for both, not sure where this is coming from.
