Yes, the medium armor continues to upgrade into specialized cleric armor for clerics.

If you want the melee-focused heavy armor that warriors and such can use, then you will need to obtain the components in order to do so.

Honestly it would be unlikely that GMs would swap out your currently held armor for the other set as that could open a flood gate of mass proportions!
