Ah, but this was shown to be true long ago, in UO and long before that:

People like to own things and upgrade them -- it's an extension of your character. Just as you like to upgrade your character by getting new gear, new skills, new abilities, new looks, the vehicle and home are simply extensions of your character (both from a database standpoint and from a gameplay standpoint). You obtain vehicles and homes, you upgrade them, you store items in them, you change their apperances, they better your character, you show them off just like you do your latest gear, etc.

So storing extra gear in your horse that is soulbound is key. So is storing items in your house so you don't have to bother with a bank. Upgrading your horse so it can travel faster is the same as getting a better sword. Getting a rare drop and wearing it to look different is pretty much the same as being able to decorate your house or guildhall with it and having guests over.

Some people have said that they demand teleportation anywhere, and I agree with you, flying around our sailing a ship isn't going to be huge for everyone. That's why when you incorporate meaningful travel you have passengers. I myself if more of a follower in online games and a leader in RL. That said, it's the other aspects that get me really excited -- the extension of your character -- more ways to advance your extended self.
