Just because the unibody allows you to create armor/clothing assets faster NOW doesn't mean that's the ideal solution to the problem of avatar customization. You have the entire life of the product to develop armor assets across a range of models. While having different models will limit the amount of assets at first, in the end you will be able to have the same amount of assets across multiple models, especially since the majority of armor assets won't necessarily be required at launch. The decision to go "unibody" will actually lower the ability to truly customize your avatar, due to the unchangable nature of the "unibody" model (without losing significant armor assets). It seems to me if the game is attempting to "future-proof" itself, "unibody" tends to go against that idea.
ninja edit: Brad do you view the something awful dot com forums? Neric, et al are riding the ban balloon.
1. It's important to 'frontload' the game to launch a competitive AAA MMOG.
2. Nothing is stopping us from modifying the tech later to change existing races and add new races (especially non-humanoid). I fully expect the tech to continue to evolve just as I expect all of Vanguard's tech to continue to evolve.
