I've heard it every year from 1996 to present day, back when people feared that EverQuest would fail against UO because of the Ultima name and franchise and because a PvE game would fail because you couldn't create enough content to justify a subscription revenue game that wasn't focused on PvP (related to the myth that PvP auto-generates signficiant content that leads to longevity, which is a proven myth -- even a PvP focussed MMOG needs content and AI opponents).
Heard it big time after UO hit about 250k. Heard it again when EQ hit 455k. Heard it again when FFXI hit 600+k. Haven't heard it though for a while since WoW keeps selling like hotcakes and now there are 6 million or so people world wide who seem to like fantasy MMOGs. And we haven't even touched some of the other genres that will make the gamespace grow like crazy again (e.g. sports and the like).
