I have to say that when I started reading, I was entirely against teleporters of any kind. Currently, I am still against teleporters, but not all kinds. Let me share a story of what I imagined in my mind:

Imagine you are sailing to another continent. You pay the captain to take you, and after everyone has boarded, you set sail. You stand on the stern as the boat leaves your homeland behind. Slowly it fades into the distance, and after what seems like an eternity, but was really about ten minutes or so, you can no longer see the land.

Suddenly, you hear a cry from the crow's nest! "There it is, cap'n! The sea portal to Kojan! Due south!"

You look out over the bow, but can't see a thing. Straining your eyes, you can make out a faint shape of a semi-circle, what looks like a setting moon. It grows larger, and larger on the horizon as you near it. Slowly, the sense of the sheer scale of this portal dawns on you. Looming into the sky above, the archway extends up to a few hundred feet either side of the boat! Stretching like curtains from the arch to the water, like a sheet of fine silk, is a layer of blue-green glowing fabric-like matter, becoming ever greener as you near it. Suddenly, the bowsprit pierces this material, sending ripples through the entire curtain beneath the gate. The bowsprit disappears into the material, not breaking it, but sliding through like a spear through water. The rest of the bow follows, slowly enveloping the entire boat, crew and all. As it nears the stern, on which you are standing, you start to feel scared. Nearly overcome with fear, with the fabric at arms length, you stand frozen and close your eyes. The fabric passes over you, feeling less like silk and more like a cool breeze. Taking almost forever, but perhaps just a few seconds, you decide to open your eyes.

On opening your eyes, you realize it was a cool breeze! The rest of the crew seems oblivious to what has just occured. You turn around, and see the shrinking into the water behind you. Then, just like before, you turn around to the voice of the boy in the crow's nest "Kojan! West Sou' West!"

This time, you can make out the cliffs and steep hills of Kojan. Just like the pictures you have seen, the hills are a hue of green and brown, faded together with the blue of the distant air. You stand awestruck as the colors of this strange land brighten as you near it. Beneath these cliffs, yellow and red-sailed junks and small canoes dance in the light. A sailor notices you staring and comments. "First time seeing Kojan?"

You reply, "Yes". No other words are needed.

See, the teleporter need not take away from the excitement of a new land, or the high fantasy feel. At least, not if done right.

Well said -- I love the RP part of it especially. We can easily weave this into the lore we have.
