Melees couldn't gate (certainly not at that level, you couldn't even use a thurgadin gate potion if you could have one, not that that solves anything either).

It was an adventure though, and left memories that are hard to wipe out. Neverteless, I never had to get an item to 'activate' the teleport as far as I can remember.

I'm pretty sure the Velious style ports were pulled from the game at some point.
