I can imagine some enterprising players trying to form a raft bridge between continents. They'd have to be very localized (like player cities around some oceanic point of interest) otherwise you'd probably get (as time goes on) troublesome inhabited flotsam littering the oceans.

The Earthsea books by LeGuin are actually one of my favorite series of all time. We thought about calling Vanguard "Earthsea" early on as a codeword until we came up with the final name for the game.
