That was one of the coolest aspects of EQ for me, and I'd like to something like that in Vanguard.

The role of the gods has only been hinted at, as they play a part in the grand story behind Vanguard... here's a quick intro to the story behind Vanguard I posted recently on our boards:

------------

Yes, there's lore and a story to explain this. I can't go into details, but as of late people have been very afraid to explore the world, much of the knowledge of the ancient world, magic, etc. has been lost. Few average people (NPCs in this case) know much beyond their immediate environment.

Lately, though, threats have been surfacing, forcing races that have been isolationist for a long time to move and to band together with other races. A small group of people, but one that will grow, are realizing that there is a massive world out there and are ceasing to be afraid to explore and want to discover this lost world, to explore, to regain lost knowledge and artifacts of great power. These people are the players of the game -- they are the Vanguard -- the first to go out and cease being afraid and to obtain power and knowledge. And the story that unfolds, starting at launch, is that this Vanguard does just that -- they begin to explore, they increase in power and knowledge, they build houses in far away lands, they obtain ships and start to sail the oceans again, they reach continents and peoples who have had little to no contact with each other for hundreds, if not thousands of years, ever since a world-wide cataclysmic event that set everyone back. And some, who are interested in the impending threat that is appearing on each major continent, will seek out what this threat is, learn about it, and start to fight against it, banding together with other like minded players, and making a difference. So the story of this Vanguard is a Saga of Heroes, because these people (the players) aren't afraid and isolationists -- they'll take risks and seek rewards, they want to see the world, they want to understand the past and also what's going on now that is threatening the people of Telon.

So there's a big world out there, filled with mystery and the unknown, but it needs players who will take risks to gain knowledge and power and to fight the good fight, whether to protect others or, more selfishly, to obtain power for only themselves or their small group of allies. That's the story in a nutshell -- more details will be uncovered as this Vanguard heads out and creates a Saga of Heroes starting in the first quarter of 2007, but with a world that will build and has been planned out with over 7 years of content and game mechanics and fantastic places to exerpeince and explore.

I hope to see you there in Telon and part of this Vanguard -- I know I'll be there and part of it myself -- the opportunities that await, the adventure, the stories that will be told -- I need to be part of that, and hopefully you feel a similar longing

------------

The role of the gods, this ancient cataclysm, why people became isolationist, virtually xenophobic, why so much knowledge was lost, what happened to the gods and how they will take on more of a role as this story unfolds, sometimes in the interest of the players, sometimes against them, sometimes purely in pursuit of their own goals, and perhaps sometimes tools of a greater power... all of this comes from a document that's virtually book sized that was written for the game and is our over-arcing storyline (although of course there are many stories and quests that have nothing to do with this grand story). So, can't say much more now... more on this later(TM).
