With Farclipping all the way up on a game that should be "future hardware proof" for atleast 3 months you shouldn't be able to see rocks/trees materialise... Fraps doesn't take THAT many resources...

Optimization means framerate. That is more important than working on different art assets 1. fading in and 2. doing so farther away. The former allows more beta testers to test well and enjoy themselves. The latter merely makes the game look better.
