Right now i think vanguard is doing everything RIGHT in game music that all other games seem to have drifted away from.
MELODY
Ever since the advent of full on audio in games there has been a huge shift to make all soundtracks an orchestrated bloated mess. Where as the soundtracks we remember most fondly were 8 bit ditties that were created for systems incapable of producing high audio channels or recording actual instruments. As a result most modern game soundtracks are utterly dull. Virtuosity has taken the forefront of originality and atmosphere.
Thats not to say vanguard shouldnt feature a few tracks done with the bigheaded symphony orchestra as you wander the plains of somewhere special per where the mood and emotion is reflected in that kind of theme. Afterall to exclude would be the same as adhering only to.
I absolutely love the mixture of different instruments and archaic musical styles. It reminds me alot of some of the beautiful artists from 4AD records such as Dead Can Dance. Some of the tracks are pretty on par with that whilst some take another direction which is refreshing and interesting. I have to be honest , when the first sound clip ( Nusibe) was released i was a bit turned away as i found it too simialar to alot of other fair in mmo's these days. After hearing Cobalts deep though , it pretty much sold the soundtrack for me that this was going to be something different. I wasnt wrong as it only got better from there , Gahrens Plain , Hathor Zi , highlands snow ( reminds me a bit of sam rosenthal ) and the gorgeous sensho are downright beautiful. I absolutely cant wait to hear more and see these in action.
Im a musician myself and basically i feel if you think smacking a bowl of pudding with a number 2 pencil is the correct sound to reflect what you are trying to emote..then go for it. I really love the more melodic pop direction this is taking and i would love to hear more vocals , perhaps something wth a more verse like set up...something like a sad ancient folk song.
I am an oldschool 4AD junkie. Sadly, most people don't know the roster from that label anymore. I love all the old DCD, Cocteau Twins, Xymox, Blonde Redhead, etc stuff. I grew up listening to it all, so I am glad some of it rubbed off in my compositions.
People need to realize that this is still a video game, and although we have a sizeable budget, there simply wasn't a huge amount for music. Audio rarely gets the attention it deserves, but things are slowly changing in the industry. Also keep in mind that there are 20+ hours of music in the game so far, and the costs for arranging, orchestrating, recording and mixing would be astronomical. As it stands, we did use members of the Seattle Symphony for the main themes in the game; roughly an hour of the total music composed. I also made the decision to not assault the player with repetitive themes over and over, choosing to go more ambient and subtle in many areas. Some people will not like the direction we chose, others will. You can never please everyone, so you just try to do the best with what you have.
