Let me put it this way. If a ratonga fighter worked hard and reached level 50, or 100, or whatever, and his guildmates said about him "Wow, he would be an awesome tank if only he hadn't chosen to play a ratonga," then I think we as game designers would have let that player down.
I understand the desire for roleplay and racial diversity, but we're making a game about being a hero. We don't want decisions made so early in the game to render someone useless later on. If that ruins your immersion or hinders your roleplay, then I'm sorry, but this is the kind of game we want to make.
Race/class choice will have a definite impact as you level up, for exactly the reasons I've stated in this thread and elsewhere. But we will not permanently hinder anyone's progression because of an unusual race/class combination. That player may have to work harder as they level up, but eventually they can achieve the same effectiveness as a more "ideal" combo through the acquisition of gear and items.
